Yosemite: Day One

The story of our trip to Yosemite actually began before we even got there. My husband was going on a backpacking trip with his best friend on Santa Cruz Island. They left Monday morning, arrived on the island, and hiked 3 miles into the first camp ground. The next morning they hiked 11 miles across the island to the other camp. During their trek it got super windy. To see a some videos of the wind and more detailed commentary on the trip visit my husbands blog. When they arrived at their camp there was a note from the ranger waiting for them. The boat that was going to pick them up the next day would not be coming due to the gail force winds! They waited around on Wednesday to see if the boat would come, or if it would be able to come on Thursday. If the winds were still to much on Thursday they would have to make a 'rescue' mission. Basically if the boat company has to make a special trip over to the island they call it a 'rescue' and they come earlier then the normal boat. We were secretly hoping they would have to rescue them since we needed to leave on our trip on Thursday! Thursday came around and they sent out the rescue boat. He got home, took a shower, and we tossed our luggage in the car and drove up to Yosemite.

5 hours later in the pitch black we arrived in Yosemite. It's a funny feeling when you arrive at Inspiration Point and can't see a thing! We checked into our tent cabin and fell asleep.

The next morning we woke up bright and early to take a tour of the valley floor. While we were on our way to meet the tour we got our first view of Yosemite Falls! It had been so cold that night that there was still ice on the sides of the falls.

I handed the camera over to my husband for about 30 seconds and he snapped a few pictures of this hawk while I wasn't looking.

There were some climbers on the side of El Capitan, about half way up. WOW those people have some guts!

The tour took us back up to Inspiration Point. It looks much better during the day doesn't it?

After the tour we headed back to Yosemite Falls. The top part of the falls are a 3 mile hike straight uphill. The bottom is a quick little walk from Yosemite Lodge. Can you guess which one we picked?

If you guessed the lower fall, you were right.

Later that night we went out to Sentinel Bridge to get some photos of Half Dome. Around sunset Half Dome gets a yellowish tint to it. Simply amazing!

Stay tuned for the rest of our trip!
